Donington Park 31st July & 1st August 2004
This will be short and sweet as we have real difficulty in finding time to race at this time of year.
We had made more changes to the bodywork as well as the new suspension at the front of the car. The previous races had been in the wet and they were run with effectively dry settings as we had little time before each race to make changes.
Donnington would be different, after a damp qualifying run on dry tyres we were second on the grid. This was OK as it was going to be a long race and we felt that the car was looking good for the dry.
Nik was delayed by a spinning car at Redgate corner, after a poor start from second on the grid. The pole sitter, Chapman, spun in front of Nik and allowed third placed driver Anthony Wilds (son of one time Formula One driver, Mike Wilds), to get into an early lead. For the first fifteen or so laps of the 2 mile circuit, Nik chased down the leader, despite initially dropping back as he sorted out a gear linkage problem. A stunning move to close up to Wilds tail at Copse corner enabled Nik to pull alongside Wilds and pass him into the Esses at the end of the straight. The next ten laps were staggeringly quick as Nik pulled away from Wilds using the traffic to great effect and posting a new lap record of 1.10.9 seconds, an average speed of over ninety-nine MPH around the entire track.
The race was textbook for us, as Nik gained maximum points, outraced the Gunn and proved the car had dramatically improved with the new parts and changes.
More new parts were to be fitted for the next race at Snetterton...
