Race at Spa Francorchamps 4/5th May 2002

Well what can we say other than how do you treat Trench foot!. Wet wasn't in it, it just did not stop. Free practise was OK but the timed practise was very damp. Nik topped the times of the sports 2s and so was on pole for the race alongside a well-driven Crossle. We had taken the decision to fit new wets and I had brought some along anticipating wet racing. They were a new batch and we have never had problems with not scrubbing in tyres before. Nik went out and had absolutely no grip at all. He could not keep the car on the track, and finished up hitting the wall at Stavello . More disappointment as practise had gone so well.

The tyres were unmarked and the supplier admitted they were the first of a new batch so we presume they are an incorrect compound, Yoko wets are normally brilliant when new.

Many hours and help from fellow racers Trevor Dyer and Simon along with Gas bottles from the ever-helpful Dave Muse, saw us taped up and ready for a reduced grid final race on the Sunday. The old tyres were back on, and a thumbs up from Nik on the warm up lap showed all was well. He started at the back of the grid and quickly moved into first place as various maladies affected other racers. The old wets were working well but he was aware that the best of their water moving ability was long gone. A last lap challenge from a charging Glen Dudley was held off and we had our first win of the season.
